Nyak Ina Raseuki, also known as Ubiet, was raised in Aceh. In the early 1980s she moved to Jakarta, where she majored in music-voice at the Jakarta Arts Institute. As she gradually discovered other possibilities in voice, her focus turned to different singing styles and traditions within vocal music. Ubiet maintains and nurtures collaborative relationships with several composers and traditional musicians and continues to perform locally and internationally. Her encounters with vocal music and a concentration on voice embellishment are what led her to meet composer Tony Prabowo, with whom she and another five traditional Minang musicians established The New Jakarta Ensemble. The “new music” group released an album entitled "Commonality" in 1999 and another work of alternative popular music called "Archipelagongs.”
